Dewsbury’s future in focus with joint funding bid
Dewsbury Neighbourhood Board set to submit 10-year plan for the future of Dewsbury.
On Thursday 6 November, Dewsbury Neighbourhood board approved and agreed the strategic priorities to be included in the Plan for Neighbourhoods, which will now be submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MCHLG), for consideration.
The submission marks a key milestone in regeneration for Dewsbury town centre and a vital step required by the MCHLG, to unlock future funding of £20m to cover the next ten years and deliver the key outcomes outlined in the plan.
The Plan for Neighbourhoods has been shaped by resident and business feedback following Dewsbury Neighbourhood boards ‘Our future Dewsbury’ consultation and aligns strongly with the objectives of the Dewsbury Blueprint and long term investment plan that sets out a long-term vision for transformation in Dewsbury.
Dewsbury’s neighbourhood plan will build on recent progress focusing on local delivery and community involvement. The aim is to bring real change to Dewsbury town centre’s streets, with cleaner, safer spaces that feel cared for and well-used. Kirklees council will be the accountable body, managing the funding and delivering the interventions.
The plan supports a stronger local economy by helping independent shops and businesses grow. It also encourages cultural and community events that bring people together and celebrate Dewsbury’s diversity.
Heritage and regeneration are at the forefront of the vision. The plan aims to bring empty historic buildings back into use, support small businesses and public spaces will be improved to make them more attractive and welcoming.
Safety and security are top priorities. A multi-agency approach will tackle anti-social behaviour and environmental crime. This includes more visible policing, better lighting, and cleaner streets.
Better transport and connections are also part of the vision. This includes safer walking and cycling routes, clearer signage, improved crossings, and stronger links between key places like the train station, market, and shopping areas.
Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for Finance and Regeneration said:
“This submission is a key step in developing a brighter future for Dewsbury. The partnership between Neighbourhood Board and the council is integral to ensure that not only can we deliver these ambitions but make sure that the voices of the local community are being heard within the plans throughout and that will be clear within the delivery if agreed.”
Sophie Johnson, Chair of Dewsbury Neighbourhood Board, added:
“Signing off our ambitious ten-year regeneration plan is an important milestone for Dewsbury. Alongside Kirklees Council, we have worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and I want to thank everyone who took part in shaping the strategy.
“The public has told us what matters most to them: breathing life back into our heritage buildings, creating a safe and inviting town centre, and supporting our local businesses. There’s also a strong desire to expand the town centre offer – from more community events and leisure options to greener, more attractive public spaces.
“I’m confident that this plan reflects those priorities and will continue to build on the great regeneration work already underway. With additional Government funding now within reach, we’re excited to keep unlocking Dewsbury’s potential and delivering lasting change.”
